Doors create a magnificent first impression. Yours can go beyond being a simple entry way to one that reflects your
personality and adds character and warmth. We use solid reclaimed lumber 40 - 100 years old , mostly Doug Fir,
gleaned from demolished houses, barns and businesses. From simple to elaborate our rustic doors can provide
you with the look, personality and mood you want.
No two doors can ever be exactly alike. The defects are naturally made and are random and will vary board to board.
Natural characteristics are knots of different sizes, variations in color, grain swirl, wormholes, pin holes.
This is part of the charm of using reclaimed lumber.
You can request a very rustic look with the natural nail holes, hail marks,
weathered by storms, pin holes, termite holes from long ago critters that no longer inhabit these doors or you can ask that we
Most of our doors are deeply influenced by castle doors from England, Spain and Italy. Built from solid wood our arched
pounded pieces you see decorating our doors giving a charm and uniqueness only limited by imagination.
Our niche is using very old kiln dried wood to make rustic doors. If you want your door to look like brand new wood in a
rustic style then tell us and we will use brand new wood. Otherwise, you are getting a piece of history. We use Doug Fir that
is solid reclaimed lumber and we can choose wood that is less rustic and sanded
smooth for a less rustic look or choose wood
that has a medium or more rustic quality to it. You can decide.
The lumber has been kiln dried. Purchased in Los Angeles from a
3rd generation demolition company.
You can see what it looks like against the wall in the gallery pictures.
The wood comes back to our U.S. Made in America carpenters at our San Diego state
of the art carpentry shop with all of the latest tools.
The hardware on the doors is made in
Guadalajara
Mexico
wrought iron hand forged.
Then these one of a kind hardware works of art are brought back to San Diego where our
American employees dress them out with the hardware, assemble
trim packages and weather stripping, order and insert glass as needed and
crate if they are going to a destination other than San Diego
A note is we used to have our doors made for years in Mexico
where carpenters worked exclusively for us.
We used to go down once a week to oversee production.
With Covid this became harder and harder and now we pay a professional driver 0 a crossing with the
doors and sometimes they end up being made incorrectly (hence our doors in stock) or end up getting damaged
the way they are transported and a lot of things that were out of our control.
We made the decision to hire very experienced
American carpenters and they with their helpers make incredible doors with the kind of quality that
will last for a generation and more. We are able to go to the warehouse every day now and
oversee every aspect of the doors being made.
These cost a bit more being made in San Diego but now we
can control the quality as we go monthly to
Los Angeles and hand select reclaimed lumber.
If you go on a website of a company that produces these doors and plug in one of our pictures and all the bells
and whistles of the hardware and letting you customize the jambs to a 16th of an inch and we don't bat an eye
if you ask us to make unusual dimensions.
For now the stain is still something we will offer included in the price
but we can only warranty the finish if you
have at least a 6' overhang. The finish on interior doors should last "forever"
but no door can withstand the direct elements.
We can give you some tips on keeping up the finish of a door exposed to the elements.
Your door will look as good as the person hanging it is qualified.
My husband no longer hangs doors but he is an expert in reclaimed
lumber doors and he can hang one to perfection in about an hour.
You cannot take a custom made door like this and pay a handyman
the lowest price possible and expect this to slide right into place like a
Home Depot pre hung interior door.
We will be glad to give advice but please make sure you or whoever is
hanging the door is experienced in hanging rustic,
reclaimed lumber doors. Even the most difficult door should not take more
than a couple of hours if you have given
us the correct rough opening measurements, jamb width and thickness of the door.
Your door will only look as good as the person installing the door.
The reclaimed lumber and hand crafted doors is our trademark.
We do not use new wood, engineered wood or
fiberglass in our doors.
On request and for an up charge we can do new knotty alder or mahogany or oak wood
but it will still have the
hand crafted look.
Our Dutch doors and double doors come with a handcrafted straight
slide bolt to hold stationary door in place.
We do NOT install the throw
bolts for the floor into the doors. You need to have your installer do
this on site so that the door lines up with where the throw bolt
will go to make the door stationary.
We can make any door into a Dutch door.
All out swing doors have security pin hinges. All hinges are 4".
All doors come with a complimentary 1" wood threshold.
Weather protection for door bottom will be customer's responsibility.
All hardware on unfinished doors will be sent separately and
the customer is responsible to install.
We can provide glass at an extra cost. We can provide:
a. Single strength tempered.
b. Dual laminate glass
c. Dual glazed 1/2" one side tempered.
Note: We can use architectural glass on some tempered,
one side laminate and one side dual glazed.
Glass adds one to two weeks to door quoted schedule except for
clear laminate glass.
Door information
When you order a door from us we will need your rough opening, the jamb width,
the thickness of the door 1-1/2 - 1-3/4
for the Doug Fir doors. It is difficult to find a standard lockset if you go any thicker.
IF you do an upgrade to mahogany or alder we can only go 2 inches.
All your hardware comes finished with installation screws and or
decorative
clavos
(wrought iron nails).
Your installer will install these after the door is finished.
If you are ordering specialty hardware like custom faux hinges or
custom door knockers this will take
Our threshold is a flat wood threshold with a beveled edge facing the exterior.
If you wish to have your own threshold just remove the wood threshold by removing the
3" screws from the jamb.
If the door is stored before installing make sure it is stored flat on level ground or if vertical
it must be at a 90 degree angle or straight up from the ground. If it is leaned against the wall
at an angle it could warp.
Because the wood is aged, worn and handcrafted, your installer needs to have enough experience
to be able to make on the spot adjustments for the perfect fit.
The door is shipped in a crate, comes broken down to fit in the crate and for
the best protection from damage.
We will take a picture of the door in the crate and will include a checklist for
everything that is in the crate
and send that to you before shipping.
The installer puts door back on hinges if it is a double door and re inserts
the hinge pins.
Single doors come pre hung.
Then the installer installs
the jamb and door for a good fit and installs the door stop and Q-lon
weather stripping included
in the crate last to fit correctly against the closed door.
We do not bore lock or dead bolt holes.
If your door is an interior door we will stain one of 5 Min Wax and Sayer colors
if you would like at no extra cost.
If your door is an exterior door you will receive unstained unless you are
buying a door that is already
in stock or you tell us there will be a 6' overhang or you tell us you will be responsible
if the stain and clearcoat do not last. We have had zero problem with
our exterior doors that are ours with
the proper overhang but every year the gates took a beating from the direct sun.
We finally painted them with Behr deck paint and we are going on three years now
where we have not had a problem but that is just us.
We are door and furniture makers not professional refinishers.
If you really want us to stain an exterior door you need to state you understand
we cannot warranty the finish if the door is exposed to the elements.
If you have a good overhang for your exterior door where the door is protected let us know.
The finish we use for interior doors should last many, many years.
The finish is not sufficient for doors exposed to the sun and elements.
There are professional finishers out there who will use a two step epoxy finish
or a paint that will protect an exterior door.
Most people ask for the exterior doors to be unstained. If we do stain we no
longer stain any door grey even though that is popular right now.
The wood absorbs the grey stain differently. You can get your own grey stain
and we can send enough extra wood so you can experiment using grey stains.
We will send you examples of doors that are distressed rustic, wire brushed with more character.
Also doors that are medium rustic the way the wood comes or less rustic
where the door is sanded extra well.
Before installing
1. Check for 1/8" space between door jamb and top of non hinged vertical jamb.
2. Can adjust if door is too tight. Remove screws at jamb connection of top of jamb to
non hinged vertical jamb. Use 1/8" spacer. Pre drill new location and put jamb back together.
