    Description

Massive Industrial Rolling Tin-Clad Fire Door Made By VICTOR MGF CO., Circa 1908 in Newburyport, MA
    Background
Boston Manufacturing Company began in 1813 building complete industrial cities in Merrimack Valley. By 1848, Lowell was the largest industrial city in America. The Industrial Rolling Tin-Clad Fire Door was reclaimed from one of these mill factories in the town of  Amesbury - which
became famous for building carriages in 1853. Circa 1878, Henry T. Moody, who made velocipedes among the other things, went on to establish the Victor Manufacturing Company, makers of fire doors, tin-clad fire shutters and heavy hardware. In 1886 Victor Manufacturing acquired Gwynne-Davenport Mercantile Building, a brick structure, at 65 Water Street, Newburyport, MA. By 1894 a series of wood-frame buildings had been constructed behind the brick building Victor Manufacturing remained here until the late 1930s.
In 1904 Victor Manufacturing secured a patent (No. 777,800) from the U.S. Patent Office -” The invention relates to a fire door or shutter hung or overbalanced to assume a normally closed position.”
