    Circa 1890 Photo
    Rat(on) Portal
    New Mexico Territory Railroad Tunnel
Circa 1890s photo of two men standing at the entrance of a 100 foot railroad tunnel which has been blasted through a rocky mountain ledge. Two more men and a dog are seated up on the ledge. The Raton Tunnel was the highest point along the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad at 7500 feet. The Raton Pass became the site of a legal battle between the Santa Fe RR and the Denver & Rio Grande who were both trying to drive their routes into New Mexico. The Santa Fe won the battle in court. Nice Western Territorial Railroad Photo.
