    . Embossed company seal lower left, with train in center. Certificate
    No. 1313
    was issued to Sarah Thompson for 10 shares of capital stock ( per share). Hand signed by company
    president George Brooke Roberts (see bio below)
    , secretary and treasurer. Certificate is about 7” x 10”. Black print on cream-colored paper.

    The Chartiers Railway Company was founded in 1867, with backing from the Pennsylvania Railroad, with a road from Carnegie (Allegheny County) to Washington (Washington County) following Chartiers Creek (a distance of 23.4 miles). The Chartiers Railway was preceded by the Chartiers Valley Railroad, formed in 1853 to fulfill the failed Washington & Pittsburgh Railroad. In 1871, the line was leased to the Pittsburgh, Cincinnati & St. Louis Railway.
    George B. Roberts (1833 – 1897) was an engineer and president of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company from 1880 to 1897 during a time in which there was a huge expansion in the company. Roberts was also president of the Chartiers Railway, the St. Louis Vandalia & Terre Haute Railroad, the Tyrone & Clearfield Railway, and the Uniontown & West Virginia Railroad.
